Campo de Borja has recently presented a study based on a doctoral thesis which explains all the geological aspects of the appellation. After studying soil types, topography and climate, they ended up with a classification of five different terroirs. The soils are mainly alluvial, with limestone and sandstone, although there is also shale in the Moncayo Massif

Vines are planted at elevations of 300 m (985 ft) in the Ebro Valley up to 900 m in the Moncayo Mountain area.
